Our kitchen tiling process

Good kitchen tiling starts well before the first tile is laid. Our four-step process keeps every job organised, accurate, and durable — from surface preparation through to final sealing.

1. Step 1

   Surface Preparation and Assessment

   Every successful kitchen tiling project begins long before the first tile is placed, with a thorough assessment and preparation of the surfaces that will carry the new tiles. When our team arrives at your property, we begin by carefully evaluating the existing condition of your kitchen walls and floors — checking for levelness, identifying any areas of moisture ingress, loose substrate, or previous tiling work that may have created uneven surfaces, and making note of any obstacles like pipes, power points, or cabinetry that will require precise tile cutting around. Old tiles, if present, are removed carefully and the substrate is thoroughly cleaned to eliminate all residual adhesive, grease, dust, and debris. Any cracks, dips, or high spots in the substrate are repaired or levelled before we proceed, because a perfectly flat and clean base is the single most important factor in achieving a kitchen tiling result that looks sharp, sits securely, and doesn't develop problems like lippage or hollow spots over time. This preparation work takes time and effort, but it is never skipped or rushed, because the quality of the finished installation is entirely dependent on the quality of the foundation beneath it.

2. Step 2

   Measuring, Layout Planning, and Tile Cutting

   Precision measurement and layout planning are what separate a kitchen tiling job that looks genuinely professional from one that merely looks acceptable. Once the surface is prepared, our team takes detailed measurements of your kitchen and uses these to plan the exact layout of every tile on every surface, determining the optimal starting point for floor tiles to ensure cuts are balanced and symmetrical, planning the splashback layout so that tiles are centred on the visual focal point of the wall, and mapping out how tile patterns will flow around corners, window reveals, and cabinetry. All tiles that require cutting — and in a real kitchen environment, the majority of border tiles, splashback tiles, and floor perimeter tiles will need to be cut — are measured and cut with professional wet saw equipment that produces clean, precise edges without chipping or cracking. Careful cutting is particularly important around power point cutouts, rangehood surrounds, and the junction between floor tiles and kickboards, where any inaccuracy in the cut line is immediately visible and creates a finished appearance that looks unfinished rather than professional. 3. Step 3

   Tile Installation and Adhesive Application

   With the layout confirmed and cuts prepared, tile installation proceeds methodically across the planned surfaces. We use premium-grade, flexible tile adhesive appropriate to the specific tile type, format, and surface being tiled — a critical consideration in kitchens, where the combination of heat from cooking appliances, vibration from appliance motors, and the thermal movement of different materials means that a rigid adhesive can eventually cause tiles to crack or delaminate. The adhesive is applied using a notched trowel that creates a consistent bed of the correct depth, and each tile is pressed firmly into place with a slight twisting motion to maximise contact and eliminate air voids beneath the tile. Tile spacers are inserted at every joint to maintain consistent, even grout lines across the entire installation, and each tile is checked for level and for alignment with neighbouring tiles as it's placed so that any minor adjustment can be made before the adhesive begins to set. In areas directly behind the cooktop or exposed to direct heat, we use heat-rated adhesive products that maintain their bond strength under the elevated temperatures that kitchen tiling regularly experiences.

4. Step 4

   Grouting, Sealing, and Final Finishing

   Once the tile adhesive has fully cured — typically overnight for wall tiles and at least twenty-four hours for floor tiles that will bear foot traffic — the tile spacers are removed and grouting begins. Grout colour selection is an important finishing decision that we discuss with every client during the planning phase, because the right grout colour can make tile joints almost invisible for a seamless, contemporary look, or provide a deliberate contrast that emphasises the tile pattern and adds visual depth. The grout is mixed to the correct consistency and applied using a rubber float, worked carefully into every joint to ensure complete fill from the tile face all the way to the substrate, then cleaned from the tile faces with a damp sponge before it sets. In kitchen environments, we consistently recommend using a stain-resistant, antibacterial grout product that resists the oils and food residues that kitchen grout lines are regularly exposed to, because standard grout in a kitchen will discolour relatively quickly and become difficult to keep clean. Once the grout has cured, we apply silicone sealant at all internal corners and at the junction between the splashback tiles and the benchtop to provide a flexible, waterproof seal that prevents moisture from entering the wall cavity and accommodates the slight movement that occurs as your kitchen heats and cools with daily use.
